The answers to so many of your hair colour questions.
HOW IS AVEDA COLOUR DIFFERENT?
Our colour works like an artist’s palette. Your artist customizes each component by hand, measuring and blending pigments and tones to make truly bespoke hair colour.
WHAT DOES “VEGAN TREATMENT HAIR COLOUR” MEAN?
Our formula is vegan, 96% naturally derived*, and made with plant-based conditioners that nourish hair. It’s colour that doesn't compromise hair health.
*On average, per ISO Standard 16128, based on volumes sold. From plant, non-petroleum mineral, and/or water sources.
WHY DOES MY HAIR LOOK AND FEEL HEALTHIER?
Our colour is made from mostly plant-based ingredients that nourish your hair while colouring it, so your hair feels softer, looks shinier, and stays healthy longer.
WHY SHOULD I GO TO AN AVEDA ARTIST?
We call our colourists “artists” because of their expertise and precision. They’re all licensed pros who receive ongoing training, know how to customize colour, keep hair healthy, and care for all different hair types.
Understanding the different colour services
What’s the difference between highlights, balayage and all-over colour?
Highlights are small, lightened sections of hair, usually done with foils, to add contrast and brightness. They create a structured look without colouring all your hair.
Balayage is a freehand painting technique where the colour is brushed onto the middle and ends of your hair. It creates a soft, natural, sun-kissed look with a smooth blend. It’s low maintenance and grows out beautifully. This technique can also be achieved with foils to achieve more lift and dimension. (Think of a “lived-in look”.)
All-over colour means applying one colour all over your head. It’s perfect if you want to cover gray, go darker, or lighter evenly. (Going lighter can only be achieved on virgin hair.)
How do single-process and double-process services differ?
A single-process colour means applying one colour all over your hair in one step.
A double-process involves first lightening your hair, then applying a second colour or toner to achieve your final shade.
Can I make a dramatic colour change in one visit?
Sometimes yes — but if you want to go much lighter or fix previous colour, it often takes a few visits to keep your hair healthy and get the best result.
Choosing the right colour for you
What tones best complement my skin and eyes?
Warm tones like caramel or copper look great on golden skin and warm eyes.
Cool tones like ash or espresso suit cooler skin tones and eyes. Your stylist can help find your perfect match.
What’s the benefit of coming into the salon for a professional colour service?
Professional colour is mixed just for you and applied by a licensed stylist who knows your hair’s needs.
Are there ingredients I should avoid?
Yes. Harsh chemicals like high PPD and resorcinol can irritate your scalp or damage hair. We use gentler, natural ingredients to protect your hair and skin.
Is Aveda colour vegan and ammonia-free?
Yes. Our colours are 100% vegan and cruelty-free. Some options are ammonia-free, while others use mild ingredients that keep your hair healthy without sacrificing performance.
PREPARING FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
How should I prepare for my colour service?
Come with clean, dry hair without heavy products. Bring photos of colours you like and be ready to share your hair history. Also, plan enough time for your appointment.
Should I wash my hair before coming in?
It’s best to wash your hair a day or two before your appointment. Natural oils protect your scalp and help the colour stick better but avoid coming into your appointment with heavy styling products or greasy hair. Think of it this way — you would never paint a picture on a dirty canvas.
How long will my colour service take?
Most colour services take one to four hours depending on what you want and your hair’s condition. Big changes or fixing colour can take a full day or several visits.
Should I bring inspiration photos or let my colourist guide me?
Bringing photos helps your stylist see your ideas, but remember some pictures are edited with filters and AI. You may need more than one visit to achieve your vision. Trust your stylist to create a look and timeline that’s perfect and will keep the integrity of your hair health.

How do I prevent my blonde from turning brassy?
Use Botanical Repair™ Purple Toning Shampoo to cancel warm, yellow tones. Use Blue Malva™ Shampoo and Blue Malva™ Color Conditioner to cancel warm, brassy, orange tones.
Use cooler water when cleansing your hair, and always use a thermal protectant like Heat Relief™ Thermal Protector & Conditioning Mist before using any hot tool like a blow-dryer, flat iron, or curling iron.

Yes — colour-safe shampoos like Color Control™ gently cleanse without stripping to minimize fading your colour.
