TONICS 101

WHAT THEY DO

AND WHEN TO USE THEM

If the past several seasons of the runway and our Pinterest boards are any indication, we share a love for ‘big’ as true as Carrie Bradshaw’s – a love for big hair that is.

“Big hair” means different things to different people, and so, leads to different styling needs. Some want to maximize their natural texture, while others want to add fullness to a blow dry, and others crave lift at the root.

Aveda now offers three styling tonics that meet each of these “big hair” styling needs: Texture Tonic, Thickening Tonic, and Volumizing Tonic. Here we discuss when and how to use each one.

Texture Tonic

The latest addition to our styling roster— Texture Tonic — is suitable for all hair types and creates instant pieciness with touchable hold. It’s incredibly versatile and works as either a wet or dry styler. Apply to damp hair and air-dry for subtle waves or apply to dry hair to augment existing texture–literally a beach in a bottle.  The formula uses magnesium sulfate as its salt component to help eliminate the crunch factor and sugar hydrates the hair and delivers a natural shine.

Thickening Tonic

Thickening Tonic is the product to reach for when you want to add fullness to your hair – it thickens hair from roots to ends by up to 20%. While the product does not need heat to work, it can act as an amazing foundation for an expensive-looking blowout. Just apply to damp hair and dry with a round brush. Thickening Tonic provides light-to-medium hold so the look lasts throughout the day.  While working backstage or onset, stylists often use hair extensions throughout the hair; then snip the extensions to meet the hair’s natural endpoint to add dramatic thickness (not length). Consider Thickening Tonic the product substitute for fuller looking hair!

Volumizing Tonic

For those seeking lift at the root, Volumizing Tonic is the answer. It provides targeted volume with the help of certified organic aloe and wheat amino acids. Apply close to the scalp to damp hair, style with some heat and go – no more dreaded flat top.  It pairs well with Thickening Tonic for those looking to amp up individual strands as well as add height.

Whatever your take on “big hair”, there’s an Aveda tonic to maximize your hair’s potential.  Try Texture Tonic for a touch of undone style, Thickening Tonic for a roots-to-ends makeover, or Volumizing Tonic for a bit of bombshell lift.
